about

I really like Minecraft, and the wandering trader is such a funny character to me. He often shows up at the strangest times, and he has such boring trades compared to his Terrarian counterpart (Traveling Merchant) unless you're playing like Skyblock or something where being able to buy an acacia sapling for 3 emeralds or whatever is the difference between having a renewable supply of acacia wood and it being completely inaccessible.

This song is mostly talking about growth, and it's me viewing growth through this lens where it's less like a slow, magestic process as in how a tree does it, and more where it can feel like stumbling around like an idiot, crashing into shit, legging it away from the cringiest parts of yourself, and just generally trying to keep it together so you can carry yourself to somewhere better, though you have no idea what that's gonna look like.

The wandering trader character I guess could be more literally represented by an epiphany I had regarding those moments where you can't sleep and your brain decides to replay every embarassing thing you've ever done in 4k 3D iMax with Dolby Atmos Audio for you, (or maybe I read it somewhere as a piece of advice, I can't remember) and the point is that that's ultimately a good thing, because it means you've grown to understand that that behaviour was, in fact, something to be embarassed about, and that the day where you stop having that happen should be an alarm bell, because it probably means you've stopped growing.

lyrics

i am trudging through this forest
i've been following a map
that i purchased from a wandering trader

it said "leave behind the parts of you that keep you up at night"
so i followed that advice and i went on my way

and now i'm using my machete
to cut my way through the leaves
and i don't know where i'm going
only where i used to be

but everytime that i look back
i see an all consuming flame
and it is eating up the forest
and to me it's on its way

so i keep on trudging through this forest
across rivers and through clearings and through snow
and i hope to find some friends and a place to rest my head
but i don't get sleep and i do trudge alone
